Property - Local Facilities
El Molino is part of a new conversion of an old olive mill. It sleeps six and shares a swimming pool with the other three properties. It has a large lounge on the first floor and terrace on the second that take advantage of the superb south facing position with stunning views of the distant Sierra Nevada, snow-capped for much of the year.
Within strolling distance of the house, Diezma itself has shops, a bank, a choice of bars and restaurants, a weekly market and even a distillery. From the village there is direct access into the Sierra Huétor Parque Natural, with a wonderful choice of paths and off-road tracks for walking and biking. Diezma is also great base for fishing with the new Embalse de Frederico Abellan just 5km away. It has an open aspect with large shallow coves all round and a restaurant built into the cliffs. Embalse de Quentar, further into the Sierra Nevada towards Granada, is also easily accessible. It has steep sides but with several flat areas ideal for a range of fishing styles. Both have carp, barbel, trout and bass.
On the outskirts of the village a thermal spring, called Los Bañuelos, is very popular amongst the locals, and the Cave of the Water, a natural grotto with stalactites and stalagmites, can be seen.
Also not to be missed are the Arab baths of Cogollos Vega.
Further afield lies Guadix (19km), one of the oldest human settlements in Spain. This is a city of contrasts. Beyond the majestic and colossal medieval Alcazaba at the high point of town (a testament to Guadix’s Islamic past) lies the Barrio de las Cuevas, the biggest concentration of cave dwellings in Europe. Guadix also has an impressive cathedral and a big open-air market on Saturdays.
A little futher, at the foot of the La Ragua pass, lies La Calahorra (39 km)
with its 16th century Castillo-Palacio, listed as a national monument, and Gor (40 km), where the magnificent palace of the local Dukes has been turned into a bullring.
In this Plaza de Toros, the villagers of Gor hold a three day summer fiesta. On the
mornings of the bullfights there are encierros where the bulls run free through the streets to the plaza. It is said that if you want a seat for the encieros, starting at 8am, they open the doors at 5am and the seats are all filled by 6am. The La Ragua pass is the only
road over the Sierra Nevada to Las Alpujarras and Gerald Brenan’s Yegen [97km].
Though far from the tourist crowds, Diezma is an ideal centre for exploring the heritage of Granada, the mountains of the Sierra Nevada, Las Alpujarras, the Marquesado and the varied country of north Granada and Almería.
NOTE: LIMITED MOBILITY visitors are suited by bedroom, shower, kitchen and dining room on one level, just one step up from patio and pool.
