Property - Local Facilities
It is not easy to describe the exceptionally beautiful location of Casa Amelia. The house faces west and the roof terrace is perfect for sipping drinks as you watch the sun set It looks out across the unspoiled Valley of Lecrin over olive and almond groves, catching the breezes so valuable in cooling the house. Roses, jasmine and a bountiful fig tree grow in the little garden in front of the house and the sound of water running in the irrigation channels ('acequias') through the village is never far away. You really can get away from it all here. The most frequent passers by are the charming elderly widows, of whom Amelia was once one, and there are English residents close by if needed.
Casa Amelia is a recently renovated house with many original features. The front door opens into a spacious beamed hall and dining room. The fully equipped rustic kitchen, winter sitting room with fireplace, and a spacious shower room are also on the ground floor. An unusual double staircase leads to an airy landing/reading area, three large bedrooms and the bathroom. A little door opens on to the first terrace shaded by an old vine and another staircase leads up to the roof terrace which has a 180 degree view over the unspoiled Lecrin Valley and the mountains beyond. The house is cool even in July/August as the breeze up the valley keeps this little part of the village cool. A baker's van delivers daily and a pleasant walk which short-cuts through olive and almond groves (or a 5 minute drive), leads you to the nearby village of Niguelas with its bars, market, pharmacy, and stores.
Acequias
On the edge of the Sierra Nevada National Park, Casa Amelia is in a fabulous location for walking (the nearby long distance GR7 footpath runs from Algeciras to Athens!). This is also a wonderful area for bird watching (eagles, bee eaters, hoopoes and golden orioles), and exploring the Alpujarra mountains . The Moorish capital of Granada (20 minutes drive) has excellent tapas bars (tapas is free in Granada province), good restaurants, Moroccan tea rooms, theatres, concerts, flamenco music, dancing and ... the palace and gardens of the Alhambra. Closer to home - it is only a 5 minute drive to Niguelas for tapas bars and musical events. The Costa Tropical with resorts such as Almunecar and the less well known Salobrena (only 30 minutes drive and featuring the 'lost boys' jumping from the cliff), have restaurants with sardines from old Tonio the fisherman, cooked over wood fires on the beach. The ski slopes of the Sierra Nevada are also less than an hour away
