Property - Local Facilities
Cortijo de las Sierras is a comfortable newly-renovated house which retains the character features traditional to the region. The house is set in its own grounds with a lovely, private pool, just outside Niguelas, in the Lecrin Valley, between Granada and the coast.
This property has a beautiful, mature garden with olive and fruit trees. There is a shady veranda for outside dining as well as the sun terrace around the pool, which is well-equipped with sun loungers. The garden borders the Sierra Nevada Natural Park at the acequia (irrigation stream) behind the house. In addition to the garden and pool terraces, visitors can also retreat to the roof terrace with its panoramic views (also equipped with table and chairs).
Beautiful walks start from the door and birds (including hoopoes, black redstarts, serins, warblers, bee-eaters, lesser kestrels & eagles) and nature abound in this region. The GR7 long-distance footpath (which wends through the heart of Europe from Algeciras to Istanbul) passes the house just below the front garden. There is also private parking at the side of the property.

Niguelas
Blue sky and hills are never far away in Niguelas, nor are bars and shops. Stroll to Carmen's bakery - which the locals claim as the best one for miles - for fresh bread and croissantes in the morning and stop in the square for a coffee. The village has grocery stores, a bank, a chemist and a doctor's surgery. It is also known for its fiestas - the main one starts the 3rd week in September, and lasts for 10 days!!
Bars & restaurants - Niguelas is a fairly quiet traditional village but there are at least 5 bars (it's hard to keep track as they keep changing!!) all run by local people. Tapas, especially on Sunday lunchtime, is great... excellent value and very sociable. There is one bar just below Carmen's bakery above the church square (Plaza de la Iglesia) run by Irene, one just below the Plaza de la Iglesia, Salvador's bar, and one on the lower square, Plaza de la Constitucion, known as Placido's bar because the lugubrious Placido owns and runs it... all are very friendly and serve tapas free with every drink. Miguel's Bar, the normal meeting place at the entrance to the village, is very popular and does good tapas and raciones. There is also Guayo's bar, which is a "man's bar". It has no sign outside but many feral kittens and empties - just follow the noise and the smell of cigarette smoke. There, you will find all the village characters - well, the male ones at least. Some even have a few teeth! Be sure to have a drink and maybe a meal at the Alqueria de los Lentos, the hostal just outside Nigüelas, on the back road to Durcal. It's a lovely old converted mill, with accommodation. A little further down past the Alqueria, El Trueno bar/restaurant does great tapas and raciones and is very reasonably priced. It is about 20 minutes walk from the cortijo. Walking home at night - or even sitting on the roof terrace - is fantastic because often the sky is very clear and starry.
If you don't want to drive into Granada, there is a regular bus service via Dúrcal. Dúrcal, the next town, has a wide range of bars, shops and restaurants and everything you would expect from a medium sized commercial town.
There are around 20 villages in the Lecrin Valley, and it is worth wandering round them and relaxing in their bars. Try Pinos del Valle (check out bar Venezia, with its views across to the Alpujarras), Albunuelas and Melegis (enjoy beer and tapas, or full meal, at Los Naranjos, overlooking the valley), to name just a few. |
