Property - Local Facilities
The Moors Orchard is an old spanish cortijo located in the Poniente Granadino - 34 km from Granada. Surrounded by almond, olive and pine trees, the property offers wonderful views of Granada, Sierra Nevada and La Vega Granadina.
The new managers of the hotel have furnished the 19 rooms with antique furniture appropriate to the building and the atmosphere is that of a charming, comfortable and relaxing country estate.
RESTAURANT
A beautiful restaurant with room for 80-100 people offers guests two types of meals: traditional dishes or the chef's special creations. The restaurant has a cosy chimenea in the centre of the room creating a warm and cosy atmosphere in winter months.
JACUZZI AND SAUNA ROOM
The Spa room is modelled upon the Arabic bathhouse tradition - with a 6 person Jacuzzi, and an 8 person sauna. Traditional massages can be booked in advance.
LIBRARY
At the heart of the hotel is a cosy library with hundreds of books at the disposal of guests seeking a quiet hour of reading, relaxation, or simply to enjoy the view from the two grand windows overlooking the magnificent Sierra de Parapanda.
CHAPEL
As in many significant country houses in Spain, there is a small chapel with room for 25-30. This may be used for services, or a quiet place of contemplation for guests. The Ecce Homo painting is probably by a pupil of Juan de Juanes (a famous XVII century Andalusian painter). There is also a beautiful picture representing St Francis - to whom the chapel is consecrated.
CELEBRATION PATIO
Our Andalucian patio has a capacity of 300 people. It is divided into three areas and equipped with a pergola for civil celebrations, a bar and a terrace with views to Granada's countryside and the distant Sierra Nevada. This can be a wonderful scenario for a wedding during the spring and summer season.
ANIMALS
Younger visitors to the house may enjoy coming into contact with farmyard animals such as hens and rabbits, or even riding our ponies, Flequillo (Spanish for 'fringe') and Ringo. There is also a giant aviary with partridges, canaries, parakeets and other decorative species.
SWIMMING POOL
The house has a large, open air swimming pool area - where guests can relax and enjoy the summer sun of Andalucia.
BIKE HIRE, HIKING AND EXCURSIONS
The house is surrounded by pine forests and almond trees. Parapanda is considered one of Granada's most important mountains. Exploring its beautiful paths by foot or bicycle may bring you to interesting sites such as la Cueva del Agua ("the Water Cave") or la Sima del Viento (the Chasm of the Wind). Bikes can be hired from the house at €6 per day. A number of nearby local excursions are recommended, including Alomartes church (designed in XVIth century by Diego de Siloé, who also built Granada's Cathedral), or the ruins of Illora castle - evidence of the Moorish resistance against the Christian re-conquest. Further afield, the following one day excursions can be organised:
- A visit to the beautiful town of Granada, where Jewish, Muslim, and Christian cultures still live together - famous for the Alhambra (the only remaining mediaeval Arab castle in the world), the Albayzin district and the historic central area surrounding the Cathedral and the Alcaycería (ancient market or zoco).
- Alhama de Granada, founded by Romans and perfected by the Moors, picturesque Alhama de Granada, clinging to the side of a cliff is famous for its hot springs, therapeutic baths and the warm waters of Lake Bermejales
- Cordoba, a monumental walled city - with a maze of narrow streets and home to the famous Mesquita with its distinctive Moorish Arches.
